A mineral can be defined as a naturally occurring, pure, non-living substance found in the rocks of the earth.
Types of Minerals:
Metallic Minerals: minerals that, when refined, yield the group of materials that we know as metals (silver, iron, and copper).
Fossil Fuels: Provide the majority of energy used in modern society (oil, and gas).
Industrial Minerals: non-metallic minerals (salt or asbestos) used by industry and manufacturing.

The Importance of Mining in Canada
Mining is important to Canada in several different ways. Canada ranks third in the world, behind the United States and Russia in the production of minerals. We are, however, the largest exporter of minerals.
Finding Valuable Minerals
Mineral deposits that are economical to mine are called mineral reserves. Each day, our mineral reserves are reduced as they are mined. It is important for Canada’s future that mineral reserves not be allowed to decrease in size.
It is the job of the geologist to narrow the search to areas offering the best chance at finding the desired mineral.
