The Fishing Industry
Fish are seen as a renewable resource because they can replace themselves.
Yet that is not entirely true! in the 1990's Canada experienced a collapse in its fisheries.
Ocean fishing is Canada's oldest industry. In the early 1500's ships from Great Britain, France, Spain, and Portugal came to Canada every summer to harvest the rich fishing grounds off of Newfoundland.

Canadian commercial fishing occurs in three areas:
Canada is one of the world's largest exporters of fish, largely because Canadians do not eat much fish (more than 50% is exported).
- The East Coast
- The West Coast
- Freshwater inland lakes

The East Coast FisheryAtlantic Canada has a particularly wide continental shelf. On this shelf are even shallower areas called fishing banks which are less than 150 m deep. Here, sunlight penetrates the bottom causing a lush growth of plankton (microscopic vegetation), which attracts large numbers of fish.

The West Coast FisheryThe most important catch on the west coast is salmon (coho, chum, pink, spring, and sockeye), although there are plenty of other varieties of fish which are caught here. Why did the West Coast Fishery Collapse?

But wait! There's more...
Check out this You-Tube video on Fish Farming. Fish Farming, Also known as Aquaculture is an alternative to the traditional fishing methods.
